Where it came from
Dokkoida?! was produced by studio ufotable in 2003 as an adaptation of a light novel series written by Taro Achi. The series was developed during a transitional period for the studio, which was then still refining the distinct visual aesthetic that would later define their major works. It centers on a protagonist who becomes a test pilot for a suit of powered armor, blending the sub-genre of transforming hero tropes with lighthearted, absurd comedy.
The character designs and animation were aimed at capturing the high-energy, slapstick tone of the source material. While it serves as an early example of ufotable's collaborative studio efforts, it was received as a niche entry in the saturated market of 2000s anime comedies. Critics often noted its quirky, irreverent approach to the superhero genre, positioning it as a nostalgic look at early studio experiments before they moved toward more serious fantasy and action-oriented projects.
