Dolly

Dolly the sheep was the first mammal to be successfully cloned from an adult somatic cell, born at the Roslin Institute in Scotland on July 5, 1996. Created by researchers led by Ian Wilmut and Keith Campbell, her existence was intended to prove that a cell taken from a specific part of an adult body could be used to create an entire, genetically identical organism. This breakthrough challenged long-held biological assumptions about cellular specialization and the potential for nuclear transfer.

The process involved transferring the nucleus from a mammary gland cell of a six-year-old Finn-Dorset ewe into an unfertilized egg cell from a Scottish Blackface ewe. While the design of the experiment focused on reproductive cloning, the resulting animal—named after Dolly Parton—became a global scientific icon. She was received with a mix of international wonder and ethical debate, ultimately living a full life at the institute until 2003, after which her remains were preserved for public education at the National Museums of Scotland.
