Dominion Tank Police

Dominion Tank Police was released in 1988 as a four-part original video animation series, adapted from Masamune Shirow’s manga of the same name. Produced by Agent 21 and directed by Koichi Mashimo, the series captures the chaotic, hyper-stylized aesthetic of late 1980s cyberpunk. It emerged during a period of experimentation in the OVA market, allowing the creators to lean into the manga's aggressive humor and high-octane mechanical designs without the constraints of television broadcast standards.

The series is celebrated for its distinctive blend of slapstick comedy and gritty urban warfare, centered on a police unit utilizing miniature tanks in a polluted, dystopian Newport City. The character and mecha designs are hallmarks of Shirow’s early style, characterized by intricate technical details juxtaposed against vibrant, irreverent character archetypes. Upon its release, it gained a dedicated international following, becoming a quintessential example of the creative freedom and visual ambition that defined the golden age of Japanese direct-to-video animation.
