Domo-kun

Domo-kun was created in 1998 by Tsuneo Goda as the official mascot for the Japanese public broadcaster NHK. Originally appearing in a series of short stop-motion animated vignettes, the character was designed to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the network's satellite broadcasting service. The creature, described as a fuzzy, brown, rectangular monster that hatches from an egg, quickly became a cultural icon in Japan due to its expressive, toothy grin and wordless, slapstick interactions with other characters like Usaji, the rabbit.

The design of the character relies heavily on the constraints and charm of the stop-motion medium, utilizing a simple, monolithic silhouette that allows for distinct physical humor without the need for dialogue. Following its television debut, Domo-kun evolved from a network mascot into a global internet phenomenon in the early 2000s, frequently appearing in fan-made images and memes. This widespread digital presence solidified its status as an international pop culture figure, eventually leading to authorized merchandise distribution well beyond Japanese borders.
