The Dongitsune campaign originated as a long-running television commercial series for Nissin's Donbei udon noodles, featuring the character of a fox spirit who manifests to a man eating the noodles. While the initial installments were short-form advertisements, the project expanded into the Dongitsune Season 2 special, produced by Tatsunoko Production. This iteration moved beyond the standard commercial format to offer a more narrative-driven experience, leveraging the studio's animation expertise to heighten the whimsical, slightly melancholic atmosphere that defined the character's relationship with the protagonist.

The design of the character was notably influenced by the illustrations of manga artist Eisaku Kubonouchi, whose work brought a distinctive, elegant aesthetic to the campaign.
