Where it came from
Dongguo Xiaojie, released in 2017, is a Chinese original net animation (ONA) produced by Haoliners Animation League. The series serves as a satirical adaptation of the traditional Chinese fable of Master Dongguo and the Wolf, reimagining the narrative within a modern, urban setting. Produced during a period of rapid expansion for Chinese domestic animation, the project aimed to blend cultural heritage with contemporary social commentary through a distinct, stylized visual approach.
The animation reflects the experimental aesthetic common to Haoliners' mid-2010s output, which often favored unconventional character designs and punchy, episodic storytelling. While the series garnered interest for its irreverent tone and its departure from standard historical fantasy tropes, it remains a niche entry in the studio's extensive catalog, representing a specific moment in the evolution of digital-first animation in China.
