Where it came from
Dorei-ku The Animation was produced in 2018 by studio Zero-G as an adaptation of the survival game manga series written by Shinichi Okada and illustrated by Hiroto Ooishi. The narrative centers on the SCM, a mysterious device that allows individuals to enslave one another through a high-stakes psychological game, reflecting the era's popularity of death-game subgenres that explore themes of power dynamics and human desperation.
The visual direction for the series aimed to capture the dark, unsettling tone of the original manga while navigating the technical constraints of a television budget. Upon release, the series received a polarized reception, with many viewers noting that the complex, multi-perspective structure of the source material proved difficult to condense into a 12-episode format, leading to a focus on the series' more provocative and shock-oriented elements.
