The story revolves around Kaiman, who does not remember who he was before he was transfigured by a Magic user. This transformation left him with a reptile's head, and a desire to find out the truth about who he really is. Accompanied by Nikaido, his female companion, he tracks down Magic Users in "The Hole" and unceremoniously chomps down on their head, hoping to find out who it was that put him in this state. One by one, they witness this "second man" inside the head of Kaiman, and after pulling them back out of his mouth he asks them all a question... "What did the guy inside my head say?"

Where it came from
Dorohedoro originated as a long-running manga series by Q Hayashida, known for its distinctively gritty, industrial aesthetic and surreal blend of hyper-violence and dark humor. The 2020 television anime adaptation was produced by Studio MAPPA and directed by Yuichiro Hayashi, marking a significant transition for the source material into the medium of animation. The production team aimed to retain the manga’s jagged, hand-drawn texture and dense, grimy world-building, utilizing a hybrid of 2D character animation and 3D CGI to replicate the unique, layered visual style that defined the print version.
Upon its release, the series received critical acclaim for its unconventional storytelling and faithful adaptation of its post-apocalyptic urban setting. It was particularly noted for its stylistic commitment to the 'Hole'—a chaotic, rain-soaked city inhabited by sorcerers and humans. The design choices, characterized by heavy use of shadows, urban decay, and grotesque character designs, were seen as a bold departure from contemporary high-fantasy anime tropes, solidifying its place as a cult classic within the seinen genre.
