Synopsis

A fire safety anime involving animals in an anime village. It teaches how to use electrical appliances and what to look out for so that electrical fires do not occur. The anime was commissioned by the Japan Insurance Association, as at the time Japan's economic miracle was rapidly changing the average life of a Japanese citizen. Families who used to live in a simple wooden home suddenly had the luxuries of TV, refrigerators, kotatsu, rice cookers, etc. Unfortunately the rapid progression left a gap of ignorance which led to many fires most commonly from leaving heat-generating products unattended as well as overloading sockets.

Provenance

Where it came from

Doubutsu Mura no Shouboushi, or Animal Village Firefighters, is a Japanese animated special produced by Group TAC in the late 1980s. Created as an educational piece, the production was designed to teach children about fire safety and emergency response procedures within the whimsical, anthropomorphic setting of Animal Village. The film reflects the studio's broader commitment during that era to producing wholesome, instructional animation that served both public interest and family entertainment markets.

The aesthetic of the project aligns with the signature gentle, character-focused style of Group TAC, a studio founded by Atsushi Tashiro that became well-known for its work on literary and educational adaptations. The design emphasizes clear, expressive character archetypes to ensure that the cautionary themes remain accessible to a younger demographic. Upon its release, the special was primarily circulated through institutional and school channels in Japan as part of local fire prevention initiatives rather than as a commercial theatrical feature.
