Doushi Miao Qitan

Doushi Miao Qitan, also known as The Strange Tales of Cat Taoist, emerged as a Chinese original net animation (ONA) reflecting the growing trend of web-based storytelling in the Chinese animation industry. Released in the early 2010s, the series was designed to adapt localized supernatural themes into a digital-first episodic format, catering to audiences accustomed to consuming content on streaming platforms rather than traditional television. It fits within a broader cultural movement in China during this period to modernize folklore through animation, aiming to create relatable, character-driven content that balances traditional mythology with a contemporary visual style.

The animation was produced by teams focusing on a distinct aesthetic that blends elements of Chinese fantasy with a simplified, charming visual language intended to make complex supernatural lore accessible to younger demographics. While the ONA format allowed for creative experimentation, the reception was largely centered within niche animation communities who appreciated the attempt to carve out a unique identity for domestic Chinese web series. Its design choices prioritize expressive character archetypes over hyper-realistic rendering, a strategy commonly employed by smaller studios during this era to maximize visual impact within the constraints of digital distribution.
