Dragon Ball: Sleeping Princess in Devil's Castle

Released in 1987 as the second feature film in the Dragon Ball franchise, Sleeping Princess in Devil's Castle was produced by Toei Animation during the height of the original anime's initial television run. Directed by Daisuke Nishio, the film serves as a loose, alternative retelling of early plot points from the series, specifically drawing inspiration from Goku's training under Master Roshi and his first meeting with Krillin. The production aimed to provide a cinematic, high-stakes adventure that expanded on the charm of Akira Toriyama's source material while fitting neatly into the established tone of the weekly broadcast.

The film's visual identity remains rooted in the classic cel-animation style characteristic of late-1980s Toei productions. By shifting the narrative to the ominous Devil's Castle, the design team leaned into gothic-fantasy aesthetics, contrasting the vibrant, comedic world of Goku with darker environments. While the film was initially designed as a standalone theatrical experience for the Toei Manga Matsuri festival, it received a favorable reception from fans of the period, eventually securing its place as a staple of the franchise's early cinematic history.
