Where it came from
Dragon Ball Super: SUPER HERO was produced by Toei Animation as the second feature film in the Dragon Ball Super franchise. Directed by Tetsuro Kodama, the project was intended to shift the visual identity of the series by moving away from traditional hand-drawn animation in favor of a 3D CG style. This stylistic pivot was personally overseen by series creator Akira Toriyama, who took a more hands-on role in the production than he had in previous films, crafting the script and focusing heavily on character designs and world-building.
The narrative centers on the resurgence of the Red Ribbon Army, a classic antagonistic force from the original Dragon Ball series, and places a specific spotlight on the characters Gohan and Piccolo. Upon its release, the film was noted for its departure from the aesthetic norms of the franchise, a decision that invited mixed reviews from fans regarding the CG integration but was widely praised for its tighter focus on character dynamics and its commitment to the legacy of Toriyama’s long-running mythos.
