Where it came from
Dragon Ball Super: Broly was released in 2018 as the twentieth feature film in the Dragon Ball franchise and the first to bear the Dragon Ball Super branding. Produced by Toei Animation, the film was developed to officially integrate the character Broly—previously relegated to non-canon status in the 1990s films—into the primary narrative continuity established by creator Akira Toriyama.
The film's visual identity was spearheaded by director Tatsuya Nagamine and animation supervisor Naohiro Shintani. Shintani’s character designs sought to modernize the aesthetic of the series, moving toward cleaner lines and a more fluid, dynamic style that prioritized high-speed combat sequences. Upon release, the film was met with significant critical acclaim, particularly for its technical animation quality, and became the highest-grossing film in the franchise at that time.
