Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods

Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods was produced by Toei Animation and released in 2013, marking the franchise's return to feature film production after a seventeen-year hiatus. The film was conceived to revitalize the series following the success of the 2008 special, with original creator Akira Toriyama taking an unusually active role in the screenplay and character design. His intent was to steer the narrative back toward the whimsical, high-stakes action that defined the original manga, while introducing a new celestial hierarchy through the character of Beerus, the God of Destruction.

The film's visual direction was overseen by director Masahiro Hosoda and animation supervisor Tadayoshi Yamamuro, who balanced traditional cel-style aesthetics with modern digital compositing techniques. Upon its release, it was received as a significant cultural event that successfully bridged the gap between legacy fans and a new generation of viewers, ultimately providing the foundational narrative arc for the subsequent Dragon Ball Super television series. Its commercial success proved that the franchise remained a powerhouse in global animation.
