Oozora Reiji isn't a lazy boy, he's just terribly unmotivated; all the clubs and activities he's joined don't interest him for long. That is, of course, until his best friend Yukino takes him to a underground arcade where an unbelievable virtual reality game is played - Dragon Drive - in which players fight each other with virtual dragons. Reiji ends up throwing all he's got into training a dragon so rare that the Dragon Drive staff are baffled. But soon Reiji learns that Dragon Drive isn't all it seems, and he might be the only one who can save an entire world from evil.

Where it came from
Dragon Drive was produced by the acclaimed animation studio Madhouse and premiered in 2002. Based on the manga series by Ken-ichi Sakura, the story emerged during a peak era for virtual reality gaming narratives in anime, centering on a young boy who discovers a high-stakes competitive game involving virtual dragons. The series was designed to appeal to younger audiences while exploring themes of personal growth and the boundaries between digital and physical realities.
The character designs and animation quality reflect the signature aesthetic Madhouse developed during the early 2000s, balancing stylized fantasy creatures with grounded character drama. Upon its release, the series was received as a solid entry in the toy-etic adventure genre, finding a steady audience through its broadcast run on TV Tokyo. While it may not have achieved the long-term international cult status of some other studio works, it remains a notable example of early-2000s shonen adaptations that emphasized tactical creature battles.
