Where it came from
Dragon Fist was released in 1991 as an original video animation produced by Agent 21. It emerged during the height of the early 1990s direct-to-video anime boom, a period when studios frequently experimented with gritty, high-octane martial arts narratives to appeal to the burgeoning home video market in Japan. The project reflects the stylistic conventions of the era, emphasizing visceral combat choreography and character-driven stakes typical of the action-oriented OVA format.
The animation and character design for Dragon Fist align with the studio's broader efforts to capitalize on the popularity of tournament-style fighting stories that were heavily influenced by popular arcade games of the time. While the production was part of a competitive landscape of smaller studio releases, it remains a notable example of the niche, self-contained narratives that were developed for enthusiasts of the genre during the early nineties.
