Dragon Half

Dragon Half was produced by Studio I.G and AIC in 1993, emerging during the peak of the original video animation (OVA) boom in Japan. Adapted from the comedic fantasy manga by Ryusuke Mita, the two-part series was created to capitalize on the popularity of parodic fantasy tropes that characterized the early 1990s anime scene. Its production sought to translate Mita's hyper-expressive, fluid, and often grotesque character designs into a high-energy animated format.

The animation direction, spearheaded by the studio's team, prioritized comedic timing and visual gag density over consistent realism, resulting in a distinctively chaotic aesthetic. The series was designed to lampoon standard role-playing game and high-fantasy motifs, focusing on the adventures of Mink, a half-human, half-dragon hybrid. Upon its release, it became a cult favorite among international audiences, noted for its manic energy and for being a prime example of the irreverent spirit inherent in the niche OVAs of the era.
