Where it came from
Drifters was released in 2016 as an anime adaptation of the manga series created by Kouta Hirano, the artist best known for Hellsing. Produced by Hoods Entertainment and directed by Kenichi Suzuki, the series was designed to translate Hirano's signature aesthetic of hyper-violent, stylized fantasy into a dynamic motion format. The production leaned heavily into a blend of traditional animation and computer-generated imagery to capture the complex, chaotic battles that define the narrative.
The series centers on a premise where historical figures from different eras are transported to a war-torn secondary world to engage in a conflict between two opposing factions. Upon its release, the adaptation was largely received as a faithful expansion of Hirano’s dark, comedic tone. While it drew praise for its bold artistic choices and inventive character pairings, the production faced scrutiny from some critics regarding the pacing of the source material's dense lore within a standard television season length.
