Where it came from
Drifters, adapted from the manga series by Kouta Hirano, was produced by Hoods Entertainment and released as an anime adaptation in 2016. The project emerged from the dark fantasy subgenre, blending historical figures from across time—ranging from samurai to gunslingers—into a bloody, chaotic battlefield. The series is known for its distinctive, gritty visual style that mirrors Hirano's signature aesthetic, balancing intense violence with sharp, irreverent humor.
The 2016 release of the Drifters special edition was intended to capture the kinetic energy of the manga while introducing new audiences to the surreal premise of a fantasy world governed by the Ends and the Drifters. The direction by Kenichi Suzuki aimed to emphasize the stark contrast between the various historical eras represented by the characters. It was generally well-received for its ambitious animation quality and its faithful, if uncompromising, translation of the source material's tone.
