Drifting Home

Drifting Home is a 2022 feature-length original net animation produced by Studio Colorido and released globally via Netflix. Directed by Hiroyasu Ishida, the film follows a group of elementary school children who find themselves adrift on an abandoned apartment complex in the middle of the ocean. The narrative serves as a poignant exploration of childhood grief, the process of letting go, and the physical manifestations of memory, building on Studio Colorido's established aesthetic of blending mundane reality with surreal, atmospheric fantasy.

The production design reflects Ishida’s interest in the architectural history of Japan, specifically the weathered aesthetic of danchi, or public housing complexes. Ishida intended for the apartment building to function as an emotional vessel for the characters, with its dilapidated state mirroring their internal turmoil. Upon release, the film was noted for its distinct visual style and ambitious scale, drawing comparisons to the studio's previous work in capturing the transient, nostalgic quality of youth.
