dTV Original Anime: Youkai Watch ♪

Youkai Watch ♪ emerged in 2021 as a dTV original series, serving as a direct continuation of the long-running franchise produced by studio OLM. This iteration was designed to revitalize the comedic spirit of the original 2014 series, focusing on the chaotic, episodic adventures of Nate Adams and his spectral companion, Whisper. By returning to the foundational dynamic that propelled the series to international success, OLM aimed to re-engage the core demographic with a familiar, high-energy aesthetic.

The character design and visual direction remained consistent with the studio's established house style, emphasizing expressive, rubber-hose-inspired animation that highlights the whimsical nature of the various Youkai. Reception for this revival was largely positive among existing fans, who appreciated the show's commitment to the franchise's roots in slapstick humor and heartfelt, albeit unconventional, lessons about friendship and personal growth.
