Where it came from
The Ebiten: Kouritsu Ebisugawa Koukou Tenmonbu OVA was produced by studio AIC in 2013 as a direct-to-video continuation following the television anime series of the same name. Based on the light novel series by SCA-DI and Kira Inugami, the story centers on the eccentric members of the Ebisugawa High School Astronomy Club. This animation project served to flesh out the comedic, meta-humorous tone of the original work while maintaining the distinctive character designs that characterize Inugami's illustrations.
The production sought to capture the self-referential absurdity of the source material, which often parodies otaku culture and standard anime tropes. While AIC handled the technical animation, the project was received as a niche entry in the comedy genre, appreciated primarily by fans who enjoyed the light novel's irreverent humor. Its development reflects the common industry practice of utilizing OVAs to provide supplementary content for established fanbases after a broadcast season concludes.
