In the land of Kuruda, warriors with magical powers and incredible fighting skills battle for the ultimate prize: the title of Sevaar, the strongest warrior in the land. Elle Ragu, nicknamed Shadow Skill, is the newest Sevaar to emerge, but that doesn't make her life any easier. Teaching her "little brother," Gau, how to be a warrior, fending off assassins from other kingdoms and thwarting enemy invasions is hard enough, but her biggest challenge will be paying off her drinking debts.

Where it came from
Shadow Skill, originally a manga series by Megumu Okada, was adapted into a 26-episode television anime series by Studio Deen and Bandai Visual in 1998. The series follows Gau Ban, a young martial artist striving to match the prowess of his adoptive sister, Elle Ragu, in the violent, fantasy-laden land of Kuruda. It was produced during a period when high-octane martial arts anime were particularly popular, aiming to capture the visceral intensity and detailed character designs found in Okada’s original printed work.
The production sought to translate the manga's stylized combat and dramatic world-building into a traditional cel-animated format. While the series garnered interest for its energetic action sequences and dedication to the shonen-style power progression, it was received as a typical product of its era—an earnest effort to capitalize on the success of the source material. It remains a representative example of late-90s fantasy anime, recognized more by niche collectors of the genre than as a mainstream cultural phenomenon.
