Provenance

Where it came from

Eight Clouds Rising, or Yagami-kun no Katei no Jijou, was produced by Bandai Visual in 1997 as a two-part original video animation based on the manga series by Yumi Tamura. Released during a decade where the OVA market was flourishing as a medium for adapted shojo narratives, the project sought to translate Tamura’s distinct supernatural and character-driven aesthetic into a cinematic format, aiming to reach viewers who appreciated the atmospheric storytelling of nineties gothic-adjacent animation.

The animation design was handled by the creative teams at Bandai Visual, who focused on capturing the intricate, flowing linework characteristic of Tamura’s art style. While the production is recognized by aficionados of 1990s animation for its stylized approach to occult themes and interpersonal drama, it remained a niche release. It is remembered today primarily as a representative example of the studio's mid-nineties effort to diversify their catalog beyond the popular mecha and action genres that dominated the era.
