Encounter with Earth

Encounter with Earth, produced by Nippon Animation in 1983, was created as a promotional film for the Tsukuba Expo '85. It serves as an early, notable example of the original net animation (ONA) format, though it was primarily exhibited in specialized theater settings during its debut. The project was intended to showcase Japanese animation prowess and forward-looking themes of environmental consciousness, aligning with the international exposition's focus on human progress and technology.

The film is widely recognized for its visual direction and character design, which leveraged Nippon Animation’s established expertise in high-quality cel animation. It sought to bridge the gap between educational storytelling and the more stylized, emotive aesthetic typical of Japanese animation at the time. While it remains a niche entry in the studio's extensive catalog, it is frequently cited by animation historians as a sophisticated period piece that reflects the optimism and artistic experimentation characteristic of the mid-1980s.
