Encouragement of Climb

Encouragement of Climb, originally titled Yama no Susume, debuted in 2013 as an adaptation of the manga by Shiro. Produced by Studio 8-bit, the series was designed as a series of short-form episodes intended to capture the therapeutic and communal aspects of hobby mountaineering. The intent was to bridge the gap between niche outdoor recreation and the slice-of-life anime genre, focusing on the development of protagonist Aoi Yukimura and her reconnection with a childhood friend through hiking.

The series is noted for its progression from a modest short-form format to full-length episodes, a trajectory that allowed for increasingly detailed animation of Japanese mountain landscapes. This aesthetic shift reflected the creator's desire to ground the narrative in genuine topographical accuracy, garnering praise from the local tourism boards of the regions depicted. Over its multiple seasons, the show solidified its reputation as a gentle, character-driven exploration of personal growth and the technical nuances of alpinism.
