Satoru Fujinuma is a 29 year old manga artist struggling to make a name for himself following his debut. But, that was not the only thing in his life that Satoru was feeling frustrated about… He has a unique supernatural ability of being forced to prevent deaths and catastrophes by being sent back in time before the incident occurred, repeating time until the accident is prevented. One day, he gets involved in an accident that has him framed as a murderer. Desperate to save the victim, he sends himself back in time only to find himself as a grade-schooler one month before fellow classmate Kayo Hinazuki went missing. Satoru now embarks on a new quest: to save Kayo and solve the mystery behind her disappearance.

Where it came from
Erased, or Boku dake ga Inai Machi, was produced by A-1 Pictures in 2016 as an adaptation of the acclaimed manga series by Kei Sanbe. The series blends elements of psychological thriller and supernatural drama, centered on a protagonist who possesses the ability to rewind time to prevent fatal incidents. The studio utilized a moody, cinematic visual style to emphasize the protagonist's internal isolation and the tension of his mission to solve a series of cold cases from his childhood.
The series was directed by Tomohiko Ito, who sought to maintain the high-stakes narrative tension found in the source material while emphasizing the emotional growth of the characters across different timelines. Upon its release, it received widespread praise for its pacing and atmospheric storytelling, establishing itself as a significant entry in the mystery genre. It is regarded as one of A-1 Pictures' more focused narrative projects, frequently noted for its effective use of suspense and character-driven stakes.
