Where it came from
Erementar Gerad: Aozora no Senki is a manga series written and illustrated by Mayumi Azuma, serving as an alternative-universe spin-off to her original fantasy adventure work, Erementar Gerad. Launched in the mid-2000s in Monthly Comic Blade, the series was conceived to explore the established world of Edel Raids—biological weapons that take human form—through a different narrative lens. It features a new cast and distinct plot threads while maintaining the central thematic focus on the bonds between humans and their partners.
The artistic style reflects the hallmarks of the shonen fantasy genre popular during that era, characterized by dynamic combat sequences and expressive character designs. Mayumi Azuma aimed to expand the lore of her universe, providing fans of the original series with an additional perspective on the complex social hierarchies and conflicts inherent to the series' setting. While it serves as a companion piece rather than a direct sequel, it was well-regarded by readers of the original manga for its commitment to the aesthetic and world-building established in Azuma's primary narrative.
