Where it came from
Evangelion:3.0 (-46h) is a short film released in 2023 by Studio Khara as part of the home video releases for Evangelion: 3.0+1.01 Thrice Upon a Time. The piece serves as a prequel to the events of the third film in the Rebuild of Evangelion tetralogy, specifically focusing on the internal operations at WILLE and the recovery of Asuka Langley Shikinami before the narrative shift in the main feature.
Directed by Mahiro Maeda, the short film continues the visual language established by Hideaki Anno's reimagining of the series. The animation aims to bridge the narrative gap left after the conclusion of the second film, providing context for the radical shift in the protagonists' alliances and the militaristic focus of the organization WILLE. It was met with appreciation by fans for its technical clarity and its ability to ground the series' high-concept science fiction in the immediate, desperate logistical struggle of its characters.
