eX-Driver the Movie Specials

Released in 2002 by Bandai Visual, eX-Driver the Movie Specials serves as a supplementary expansion to the eX-Driver franchise, which focuses on a futuristic world where autonomous vehicles have become the norm. The story centers on the 'eX-Drivers,' human operators who intervene when the automated systems malfunction, combining a love for classic cars with high-stakes science fiction action. This collection of specials was produced to bridge the narrative gaps following the main series and the theatrical film, providing additional context to the characters and their high-speed pursuits.

The visual identity of the project remains consistent with the work of character designer Kosuke Fujishima, who brought his signature style to the series' sleek, retro-futuristic aesthetic. Bandai Visual aimed to leverage the popularity of the original OVA series by offering these specials to satisfy the niche demographic of fans interested in the interplay between nostalgia for internal combustion engines and an automated future. Upon release, the project was received as a modest, character-driven companion piece that maintained the technical charm of its predecessors without straying far from the established visual conventions.
