Fafner: Heaven and Earth

Fafner: Heaven and Earth was produced by studio Xebec and released in 2010 as a bridge between the first television series and its later sequels. The project was conceived to satisfy persistent demand from the franchise's fanbase, serving as a cinematic expansion of the series' themes regarding identity, trauma, and the existential struggle between humanity and the Festum. By returning to the core cast established in the 2004 series, the film sought to provide emotional closure for the initial narrative arc while setting the stage for future expansions of the Fafner universe.

The film's visual and narrative direction was guided by the creative team behind the original series, maintaining the show's signature focus on melancholy atmosphere and complex mecha combat. The character designs, originally envisioned by Hisashi Hirai, were refined to reflect the maturation of the protagonists since the end of the television run. Upon its release, the film was well received by established followers of the series, who praised its ability to balance intense action sequences with the character-driven drama that had become the hallmark of the Fafner franchise.
