Fafner THE BEYOND

Fafner THE BEYOND is a multi-part theatrical film series that serves as the direct sequel to the acclaimed Fafner in the Azure: Exodus. Produced by studio Xebec Zwei and released beginning in 2019, the project was conceived to conclude the long-running narrative threads established throughout the franchise's history. It maintains the series' characteristic focus on existential dread, the ethics of transhumanism, and the cyclical nature of conflict, continuing the tradition of complex science fiction storytelling that has defined the property since its 2004 debut.

The visual design and direction for the project were led by veteran staff who sought to refine the series' signature aesthetic while elevating the production values for a cinematic scale. Takashi Noto, a longstanding contributor to the Fafner franchise, took on the role of director, emphasizing a tone of somber reflection contrasted with high-stakes mecha combat. The work was met with appreciation from the series' dedicated fanbase, who lauded the production for successfully evolving the character arcs and thematic density that had been cultivated over nearly two decades of television and OVA releases.
