Fei Ren Zai

Fei Ren Zai, which translates to Non-Human, began as a popular webcomic created by the artist Yi Zhi Tiao before being adapted into a web-based animated series by studio FENZ. The series serves as a comedic reimagining of Chinese mythology, placing ancient deities and legendary creatures into the mundane setting of modern corporate life and urban society in China. It emerged during a period of rising interest in domestic animation that reinterprets traditional folklore for contemporary audiences.

The animation style favored by FENZ maintains the clean, expressive aesthetic of the original comic while utilizing a lighthearted ONA format to explore themes of cultural assimilation and professional satire. The series was designed to be accessible to a wide audience, relying on dry wit and situational humor rather than grand epic tropes. Upon its release, it was well-received for its unique ability to ground supernatural characters in relatable, often trivial, everyday challenges.
