Feeling from Mountain and Water

Released in 1988 by the Shanghai Animation Film Studio, Feeling from Mountain and Water is a landmark work of ink-wash animation. Directed by Te Wei, who returned to directing after a long hiatus following the Cultural Revolution, the film represents the pinnacle of the studio’s experimentation with traditional Chinese aesthetics. It was created as a contemplative, non-narrative piece intended to evoke the philosophical intimacy between a master musician and his student, utilizing the unique fluidity of ink-wash painting to suggest atmosphere rather than define physical boundaries.

The film's visual design is credited to the artist Wu Shanming, whose fluid brushwork allowed characters to merge and dissolve into the backgrounds of mist and mountains. This technique, which required each frame to be painted individually, was a technical marvel that drew international acclaim for its poetic restraint and departure from the rigid animation styles common in global cinema at the time. It is widely considered the final masterpiece of the 'ink-wash' animation movement in China, capturing a serene, meditative quality that remains a touchstone for animators worldwide.
