Where it came from
Fena: Pirate Princess was produced by the renowned Japanese animation studio Production I.G and premiered in 2021 as a collaborative original project between Crunchyroll and Adult Swim. Conceived as a high-seas adventure, the series draws inspiration from classic swashbuckling tropes while blending them with elements of fantasy and historical romance, reflecting a deliberate effort to create an accessible, cinematic narrative for an international audience.
The series was directed by Kazuto Nakazawa, whose previous work includes the animation direction for Kill Bill Vol. 1. Nakazawa aimed to craft a visually distinct aesthetic that leaned into the grandeur of 18th-century maritime themes, paired with the studio's signature fluid action sequences. Upon its release, the show was widely noted for its ambitious visual style and its effort to bridge the gap between traditional anime storytelling and Western-style action-adventure serialization.
