Where it came from
Frankenstein Family is a Chinese animated series produced by Big Firebird Cultural Media, which premiered in 2018. The series is based on a popular web manga created by Yanai, originally serialized on the Tencent Animation platform. It was developed to capitalize on the growing demand for diverse, high-quality domestic animation in China, blending elements of gothic horror aesthetics with a focus on family dynamics and interpersonal relationships.
The character designs and narrative tone were crafted to balance a dark, atmospheric visual style with the emotional beats typical of the 'slice-of-life' genre. As an adaptation, the project sought to translate the manga's unique art style into a fluid television format, receiving attention from international audiences through streaming platforms. It is recognized for its unconventional premise involving genetic experimentation and the efforts of a protagonist to restore his loved ones.
