Where it came from
Free! The Final Stroke: The Second Volume was released in 2022 as the concluding chapter of Kyoto Animation's long-running sports anime franchise. Serving as the direct follow-up to the 2021 first volume, this film was produced to bring the narrative arc of protagonist Haruka Nanase and his fellow competitive swimmers to a definitive close, reflecting on themes of legacy, friendship, and the evolution of athletic ambition.
The film was directed by Eisaku Kawanami, who steered the series through its emotional maturation. The production is widely noted for maintaining the studio's high technical standards, particularly in the fluid, detailed animation of the water sequences—a signature aesthetic for the franchise. Upon release, the film was received as a sentimental farewell by its dedicated fan base, praised for its character-driven focus and the culmination of the series' decade-long journey.
