Where it came from
Released in 1989, this anime special is a notable adaptation of the manga series T.P. Bon created by Fujiko F. Fujio, the legendary duo behind Doraemon. Produced by Studio Gallop, the special belongs to a body of work that explores themes of time travel and moral ambiguity, positioning the series as a more mature science-fiction endeavor compared to the lighthearted narratives typically associated with the creators' earlier hits.
The production was crafted during a period when Fujiko F. Fujio's manga were being frequently adapted into animated specials and features. Studio Gallop, known for its meticulous approach to character animation, focused on capturing the distinct, clean lines of the original manga. While it was received as a niche entry in the author's extensive catalog at the time, it is now recognized by animation historians as a faithful distillation of Fujio's unique approach to the genre.
