Fujiko F. Fujio no Sukoshi Fushigi Tanpen Theater

Released in 1990 by Shogakukan-Shueisha Productions, this OVA anthology explores the 'sukoshi fushigi'—or 'a little mysterious'—thematic approach that defined the short stories of Fujiko F. Fujio, the legendary creator best known for Doraemon. These episodes moved away from his iconic gag manga style to delve into surreal, science-fiction, and often melancholic narratives that highlighted his versatility as a storyteller. The collection serves as an atmospheric translation of his print work into animation, capturing the whimsical yet grounded tone that became his creative hallmark.

The animation design was crafted to mirror the clean, approachable aesthetic of Fujiko's original line art while utilizing the fluidity of the 1990s OVA format to enhance the uncanny nature of his tales. By focusing on speculative fiction and human folly, the production team sought to introduce broader audiences to the depth of his portfolio beyond children's comedy. The project was well-received by fans of his literary work, as it successfully preserved the quiet, introspective pacing of the source material while bringing his unique visual vocabulary to life on screen.
