Where it came from
Kiteretsu Daihyakka originated as a manga series created by the duo Fujiko Fujio, which ran from 1974 to 1977. The 1987 special served as the introduction to the long-running anime adaptation produced by NAS and Studio Gallop. The narrative follows a young inventor named Eiichi Kite who discovers his ancestor's Kiteretsu Daihyakka, a comprehensive encyclopedia of inventive blueprints, which he uses to build various gadgets to solve his daily problems.
The design of the series reflects the signature aesthetic of the Fujiko Fujio studio, known for blending whimsical science fiction with suburban Japanese life. The character designs prioritize simplicity and expressiveness, intended to appeal to a younger audience while maintaining the studio's classic visual language. Upon its debut, the series was well-received for its creative ingenuity and eventually became a staple of children's television, running for several hundred episodes.
