Munich, Germany, 1923. Two years have passed since Edward Elric was dragged from his own world to ours, leaving behind his country, his friends and his younger brother, Alphonse. Stripped of his alchemical powers, he has been all this time researching rocketry together with Alphonse Heiderich, a young man who resembles his own brother, hoping to one day find a way back home. His efforts so far had proven fruitless, but after lending a hand to a troubled gypsy girl, Edward is thrown in a series of events that can wreak havoc in both worlds. Meanwhile, at his own world, Alphonse Elric ventures deeper into the mysteries of alchemy in search for a way to reunite with his older brother.

Where it came from
Conqueror of Shamballa was released in 2005 as the cinematic conclusion to the original 2003 anime adaptation of Hiromu Arakawa’s Fullmetal Alchemist manga. Produced by studio BONES and directed by Seiji Mizushima, the film serves as a direct sequel to the series finale, following Edward Elric as he navigates a parallel universe resembling 1920s Germany. The production was intended to provide closure for the divergence in the anime’s storyline from the original manga narrative, which was still in progress at the time of the television series’ completion.
The film’s design reflects the distinct, mature aesthetic that studio BONES established for the series, blending the fantastical elements of alchemy with the gritty, historical atmosphere of the interwar period. By incorporating real-world figures such as Fritz Lang and themes of sociopolitical unrest, the creative team sought to ground the brothers' journey in a tangible, albeit alternate, reality. Upon its release, it was well-received by fans for its ambitious scope and the emotional resonance of its final resolution to the 2003 series' continuity.
