Our lucky customer this time is Keiji, an 8-year-old boy who loves fishing. He gets a "Tsuri Taiyaki," a mysterious candy that allows him to catch taiyaki, and starts fishing with excitement...

Where it came from
Fushigi Dagashiya: Zenitendou, originating from the popular children’s fantasy book series by Reiko Hiroshima, was adapted into a cinematic feature by Toei Animation as part of their Toei Manga Matsuri program. The story centers on Beniko, the mysterious proprietor of a magical candy shop who offers enchanted sweets that grant customers their deepest desires, provided they follow her precise instructions. The Tsuri Taiyaki episode explores themes of greed and consequence, reflecting the series' recurring cautionary motifs.
The animation style mirrors the distinct character designs established in the book's illustrations by jyajya, prioritizing a whimsical yet slightly unsettling aesthetic that captures the shop's supernatural atmosphere. Toei Animation focused on translating the tactile nature of the candy-making process and the emotive reactions of the protagonists to emphasize the moral stakes of the narrative. The adaptation was well-received by fans of the source material for its faithful depiction of Beniko's enigmatic presence and the vibrant, mystical world of the Zenitendou shop.
