After nine-year-old Melmo loses her mother in a car accident, she is left to care for her two younger brothers, a task far beyond her age or means. However, in the midst of her grieving, Melmo is visited by the ghost of her deceased mother who gives her a bottle of miraculous candy, capable of transforming her into either an adult (blue candy) or an infant (red candy). A combination of the two can reduce her to a fetus and then change her into any animal she imagines. Drawing on a seemingly inexhaustable supply, Melmo uses her candies to solve the various problems thrown her way, aided by her younger brother Toto (who accidentally morphs into a frog in episode 7) and her cantankerous mentor, Dr Nosehairs.

Where it came from
Fushigi na Melmo, known in English as Marvelous Melmo, was produced by Tezuka Productions and first aired in 1971. It holds historical significance as the first independent television anime series created by Osamu Tezuka after his original studio, Mushi Production, began to face severe financial instability. The series follows the story of a young girl who receives magic candies from God that allow her to change her age, a narrative device Tezuka utilized to explore complex themes of growing up and the intricacies of human development.
Osamu Tezuka both wrote and illustrated the original manga, which served as the foundation for the series. His design approach for Melmo blended his signature 'star system' character style with a more educational, moral-driven narrative tone intended for younger viewers. While it was arguably less commercially successful than his high-profile works like Astro Boy, it was received as a uniquely personal project that reflected Tezuka's interest in biology and the psychological transitions of childhood.
