600 years ago, J9 roared through the Solar System to fight evil and get rich. Now things are worse than ever, as lawlessness threatens to overcome the fragile ruling government and an alien fleet from outer space arrives to upset the balance even more. Amid the chaos, old friends Digo and Schutecken found the Cosmo Rangers, an updated J9, to combat crime in the asteroid belt and beyond. But even with talented members like Billy the Shot, Jumping Sama, and Lila the Immortal Butterfly, they quickly get in over their heads as their group expands to the size of an army and they become the guardians of a crumbling government.

Where it came from
Galactic Gale Baxingar was produced by Kokusai Eiga-sha and aired in 1982 as the second installment in the J9 series, a trilogy of space-themed anime known for their blend of science fiction and jidaigeki historical drama. The series was conceived to build upon the success of its predecessor, Galaxy Cyclone Braiger, by exploring themes of interstellar outlaws operating within a crumbling cosmic government. It specifically leaned into the concept of a motorcycle-themed superhero team, reflecting the period's cultural fascination with high-speed transit and futuristic combat gear.
The character and mecha designs, most notably the titular Baxingar robot, were handled by the series' creative team with an aesthetic that emphasized intricate transformation sequences. The design goal was to provide a distinct silhouette that could shift between humanoids and multi-part vehicle configurations, a hallmark of early 1980s robot anime. While it remains a cult classic rather than a mainstream phenomenon, the series is well-regarded by collectors for its narrative ambition and the stylistic influence it exerted on later mecha designs within the genre.
