Where it came from
Galactic Patrol Lensman was produced by Magic Bus and Madhouse and aired on TV Asahi in 1984 as a companion to the feature film. The series was based on the foundational space opera novels by E.E. 'Doc' Smith, which had been adapted with significant creative liberties to suit the aesthetic trends of 1980s Japanese animation. The project was intended to capitalize on the rising popularity of grand-scale science fiction, blending traditional cel animation with experimental computer-generated imagery.
The character designs were handled by Kazuo Tomizawa, who leaned into a streamlined, high-contrast style that contrasted with the more grounded visuals of the original literature. While the production pushed technical boundaries for its time, the series faced a complex reception, as its radical departures from Smith's source material polarized existing fans of the novels. Despite this, it remains a notable artifact of the mid-eighties transition toward more visually ambitious science fiction television.
