Gdleen

Gdleen was released as an original video animation in 1990, produced by Seta Corporation. It serves as an adaptation of the science fiction novel series written by Koji Hayashi, which sought to blend space opera tropes with a distinct late-eighties aesthetic. The project emerged during a period when Japanese studios were aggressively exploring the OVA market as a format to experiment with more mature or complex narratives that did not fit the constraints of episodic television.

The character designs were handled by Yasuomi Umetsu, whose stylistic influence is evident in the sharp, detailed anatomical proportions common to the era's high-end animation productions. While the title is noted for its visual ambition, the production was met with a mixed reception; it is often discussed by enthusiasts for its unique place in the Seta Corporation catalog rather than for achieving widespread critical acclaim upon its initial home video release.
