As civilization advances, people are beginning to lose the consideration and kindliness for Nature. This has incurred the wrath of the ghosts who are becoming increasingly unhappy with the selfishness of the human kind. However, there is a conflict of interests within the ghosts in which one extreme opposes the humans completely while another extreme desires the co-existence of humans and ghosts. Kitaro and his family belongs to the latter category and yearns to seek mutual understanding between the humans and ghosts. Kitaro's fight for love and hope continues.

Where it came from
The 1985 television adaptation of Gegege no Kitarou represents the third major animated iteration of Shigeru Mizuki's seminal manga series. Produced by Toei Animation, this series arrived during a period of revitalized interest in Japanese folklore and supernatural storytelling. It was designed to modernize the aesthetic of the 1960s original while maintaining the eerie, atmospheric charm that had defined Mizuki's work for decades.
The production team leaned into a distinct color palette and a blend of traditional yokai mythology with contemporary urban settings. This adaptation is noted for its faithful yet accessible interpretation of the source material, balancing Kitarou's melancholic nature with the humor provided by his father, Medama-oyaji. Upon its broadcast, it was well received for bridging the gap between nostalgic fans of the older manga and a new generation of viewers, solidifying the franchise's place in the canon of Japanese popular culture.
