Ken, Joe, and Akira, three high school students, must combine their three mecha into Gekiganger III to defeat the evil Prince Akara and Emperor Hyperion. The OAV is a compilation of the scenes from Nadesico, a new "movie", and is a parody of many mecha series from the 80s.

Where it came from
Gekiganger 3 originated as a 'show-within-a-show' featured in the 1996 anime series Martian Successor Nadesico. Due to its popularity with fans who appreciated it as a nostalgic pastiche of 1970s Super Robot anime—specifically echoing the style of Go Nagai works and the Getter Robo series—the studio Xebec produced this standalone OVA in 1998 to flesh out the fictional series' lore.
The OVA serves as a stylistic tribute to the genre's golden age, intentionally utilizing limited animation techniques and dramatic, over-the-top narrative tropes characteristic of mid-70s mecha programs. It was designed to function simultaneously as a sincere homage to the genre's tropes and a lighthearted expansion of the Nadesico universe, ultimately finding its niche among enthusiasts of both retro-robot aesthetics and meta-narrative anime storytelling.
