Where it came from
Ghost Cat Anzu is a 2024 animated feature film produced by Shin-Ei Animation in collaboration with the French studio Miyu Productions. Based on the manga by Takashi Imashiro, the story centers on a stubborn, supernatural cat living in the Japanese countryside who assists a young girl navigating her personal grief. The film utilizes a distinct rotoscoping technique, where live-action footage is filmed first and then hand-animated over to create a highly expressive, fluid performance style that captures the nuance of human and feline movement.
The film was directed by Yoko Kuno and Nobuhiro Yamashita, who aimed to blend the grounded, often comedic tone of Imashiro's manga with a visually textured aesthetic that differentiates it from traditional digital animation. The production was notable for its cross-cultural partnership, merging the Japanese sensibilities of Shin-Ei’s studio history with the artistic freedom often associated with European independent animation. Upon its debut, the film was praised for its offbeat humor, emotional depth, and the unconventional, slightly cynical personality of the titular cat.
