Where it came from
Giant Killing is a long-running Japanese sports manga series written by Masaya Tsunamoto and illustrated by Tsujitomo, which began serialization in Morning magazine in 2007. The narrative distinguishes itself from typical high-school sports manga by focusing on the professional J-League, specifically the struggles of a fictional club, East Tokyo United. The series was conceived to provide a more grounded, analytical look at the tactical and managerial side of football, moving away from supernatural tropes to highlight the complexities of team dynamics and club survival.
Tsujitomo’s artistic direction captures the intensity of the pitch with a dynamic, sharp aesthetic that emphasizes movement and strategic positioning. The series was met with critical acclaim for its sophisticated portrayal of sports management and fan culture, leading to a successful anime adaptation produced by Studio Deen in 2010. It remains a respected title among enthusiasts for its realistic depiction of the professional football industry and the psychological pressures faced by both players and coaches.
